Reflections from the Sidelines

God gave me a glimpse of his outstanding faithfulness earlier this month as he gave me encouragement and fuel for endurance (Romans 15:5) from a chance meeting with some FCA student leaders.  While working in the office one day, Michelle mentioned that one of the high school huddles was having a leaders meeting at a Starbucks down the road.  Wanting to meet some of the faces I had been working to support all summer, I hopped in the car and we went.  When we got there, there were two girls, a football player, and the huddle sponsor (a teacher).  While I sat quietly, these students jumped into conversation about their vision for the year, how often they should meet, wanting to get more student speakers to talk, where to meet, and how to invite more people to join them.  Simply seeing their ownership of this huddle warmed my heart and brought an unshakeable smile to my face. Yet it was when the football player began speaking that I could feel God personally pouring into my soul.  He told us about the amazing changes that happened to his teammates and his team at Team Camp, and how they were pushing to keep that fire going this season both on the field and off the field.  He spoke of teammates he had long given up hope on accepting Christ and craving team bible studies to know more, ideas to meet once a month as a team to go church together, and how the coaches where starting to get behind this!

As I saw the passion he had for God, I was reminded of a much younger me, in a similar season of life.  Rather than be bitter that I was no longer in that season, like I have been before, I was renewed!  Upon leaving that meeting I wanted to simply go home and dig deep into worship and God’s word!  While the feeling wore off as I went about my week, God taught me an important lesson that day.  Joy and peace can be felt, but they are not feelings.  It is both a gift from God and a conscious choice of where we keep our heart.
